In Chinese, Qigong is two words. Qi means ‘(life) energy’ and gong means ‘to work on something’. Next to this, there is also the word Yi, which is like ‘feeling where your stress is located’. Qigong Yi is working on your life energy. It is the Chinese system of health combined with body posture, breathing, and physical and mental relaxation.
Today, modern techniques have been added to the classical movements in order to adapt on modern standards. Qigong Yi consists of exercises and breathing techniques which teach you what to feel. Examples are feeling of warmth or sensations through your body when you are relaxing yourself in the proper position. If you practice the Qigong exercises continuously, you will be more aware of sensing your body and learn to let go your tensions more easily.
Many say that energy (Qi) flows freely through the body. With Qigong Yi physical and mental processes are not separated from each other. Emotions are seen as events which happen in the whole body and not just in the brains. Emotions are expressions which you will notice through your body, so they are a part of your body. You will notice this when you practice Qigong Yi in the arising of different kind of emotions.
A lot of feelings are ‘stored’ in the inner lining of the small intestines and the stomach. Many people say, that they feel things in these regions. You see this also in our language as ‘belly feelings’ or ‘gut feelings’. These emotional problem can lead to serious complaints! All kind of feeling, like anger, fear of sadness can go together with physical tensions and could eventually cause damage to the body!
There are many ways of dealing with these feelings.
• One way is to suppress it, by going to work or sport intensively. This solution is more or less a kind of distraction.
If you will not see the real problem, you will get more complaints and will not see the link between the complaint
and the cause. Your pain will remain.
• A second solution is to talk about your problems. This could help a lot, especially when you start immediately.
Speak with someone you trust why you are sad or irritated. You could also tell the person who had hurt you what
happened. You make an agreement with this person and there will be relief. Although, there could be still some
kind of tensions. Especially when you are hurt intensively. It is possible you try to suppress this feelings, but
eventually this will be in vain.
• The last way is to accept your feelings. You will lose your tensions and you will free yourself of complaints. This is
way of Qigong Yi.
During exercise it is possible that you will be confronted with many suppressed feelings. You will have to learn to accept it by focusing yourself on the movements.
